Spanish Wine History

Spanish Wine History

A brief introduction to Spanish wine history:

Approximately 3000 years ago, the first vineyards where planted in Spain by the Phoenicians traders who found the land in Spain similar to their own. They first produced wines in what is known today as Sherry country. When the Romans conquered most of Spain, they introduced new wine making styles and skills until the collapse of the empire in the 5th century. As was the practice, invading legions would plant vines and introducing new viticultural techniques.

Some methods of wines making introduced by the Romans can be seen in some remote areas of Spain today, these methods are known as “Metodo rural”. Moorish invasion of Spain lasted about 800 years; they introduced distillation methods wich they originally used for perfumes and cosmetics, which they stumbled across for use with wine making.

In Spain today new wine making techniques exist alongside traditional methods, native and international grapes varieties also flourish in Spain today, you can even see different grape varieties growing in neighbouring vineyards. In modern Spain today, new vineyards run by people who have new ideas and willing to experiment with new styles and tastes, are the ones who manage to produce new wonderful wines full of body, flavour and great texture, this is seen by their bigger wine making competitors and spurs them into action to try to improve their wines. All this is great news for the consumer, who has a better choice of wines today than ever before.

The good news today in Spain is that the regulating bodies are prepared to look at new ideas and innovations. With high tech underground air-conditioned cellars, it is now easier than ever before to produce great wines year after year. After approximately 3000 years, winemaking methods in Spain have improved considerably, now producing some of the best quality wines in the world.
